Robinson as Larsen deviates some way from London's plot for the better, I think.Roger Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11012987757094423896noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5477956438422079368.post-5316336696175072742021-12-09T10:22:50.845-05:002021-12-09T10:22:50.845-05:00I agree with Mr. Slocum. London and Kipling come from diametrically opposed places philosophically and politically, and it definitely shows in the treatment--not least, the extremely critical stance London takes toward Larsen's brutal, "Nietzschean" view of life (which criticism Larsen's own destruction completes).

Incidentally, I found London's Martin Eden an interesting reversal of Humphrey's situation. (Instead of the cultured man forced to survive among rough sailors, there we had the rough sailor finding himself in a world of wealth and culture and struggling to be part of it--though of course it made for a very different type of story.)Naderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06937701625419069972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5477956438422079368.post-15688773991130553742021-12-09T09:59:22.227-05:002021-12-09T09:59:22.227-05:00Great review. Disco Troop, the captain in Captains Courageous, is a good man, and Harvey Cheyne, the castaway, learns important life lessons from him.Bill Slocumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05870693240402072887noreply@blogger.com
