And the violence, especially the bit "off camera" - brilliant. <br />I know nothing about "real life" agents, but I have always seen Hamilton's take on the genre as "true". It makes sense, they could be like that... But I could be wrong :)spredohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00776741758077139066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5477956438422079368.post-47655374861803541372020-04-22T21:35:17.839-04:002020-04-22T21:35:17.839-04:00Good to see some conflict! Hamilton could be kind of oblique in his writing at times and lacked the pure craftsmanship of Westlake. So while the ultimate point of this book about the suburban man casting off the shackles of society (which is often what we try to do when reading these books) is awesome, I felt that it could have been delivered with more punch and intensity than is done here. Still, yes, it is super cool and really captures brilliantly the tension of the era as the veterans of WWII mowed lawns and took the commuter train to the office.OlmanFeelyushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17521657876810568251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5477956438422079368.post-30992690205898256232020-04-22T17:45:26.214-04:002020-04-22T17:45:26.214-04:00Fine analysis. This novel is...I have to agree with Tom's take. This novel is a dark psychological drama, not an action-packed men's adventure or plot-driven spy thriller. It's about the re-awakening of Helm's predatory, animal instincts after the deadening influence of 15 years of suburban family life. It's pretty edgy stuff compared to "James Bond saves the world" or "Mack Bolan sticks it to the mob". I reviewed it at https://shadowwarjournal.blogspot.com/2020/04/death-of-citizen.htmlShadow Scouthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09975672050592846838noreply@blogger.com
