On this episode we are examining the noir work of successful author Richard Matheson, who's predominantly known for his horror and science-fiction work. We have two new reviews for you, 1955's "A Bullet for Cinderella" by John D. MacDonald and William W. Johnstone's 1984 western "The Last Mountain Man". 1. You'll really enjoy Matheson's "The Beardless Warriors." Great story, superb characterizations and the most intense battle sequences I've ever read. One of my favorite books of all time.

  2. Be certain to add “The Shrinking Man” (the book and the movie) to your “to read” list. Let me know how it holds up. I read it just about 60 years ago in the original Gold Medal edition.

  3. I've been going through and listening again to all the back podcasts recently and wanted to say I just thoroughly enjoyed the little aside in this episode on JDM. Tom is right that A Bullet for Cinderella is top shelf stuff. I really do agree that JDM's stand-alones are generally better than the McGees, though I would contend - contra Tom's comment - that the even the best of the McGees are all inferior to the best of the stand-alone stuff. Dead Low Tide, Deadly Welcome, The Soft Touch, A Key to the Suite, The Empty Trap, You Live Once, The Drowner, The Crossroads, The Executioners, and Murder in the Wind are all, to my mind, better than any McGee book. There's a harder edge to the tone of the stand-alones that I prefer. And I think narrative-wise they are also generally more tight. They burn clean and fast and just move and drive forward better. Tom's comments on End of the Night were rather heartening to hear. I heard and read nothing but seriously laudatory stuff about that book. Then I read it and just didn't much care for it. To find I wasn't a solitary outlier was nice. These episodes are all just as good second time around as they were the first. Thanks for the work you guys put in. Looking forward to the 100th episode whenever it drops.
