L.R. Payne, author of that Able Team book, was (is?) Robert Payne, a San Diego writer well regarded by GE readers for the immediacy of his OTT writing. Yes, he was GH Frost. Only met him once. A most secretive but worldly seeming fellow. Told me his stylistic trick for establishing narrative immediacy was to avoid using the word "was." Never did read the guy but I did adapt that trick as one of my own.
